Ok guys, I know it's been awhile since I've talked about the Mivec Controller, but I was able to do some more testing today and we were able to use the FIC for ADVANCING ignition timing...this was our biggest problem as the stock ECU advances the timing about 6-7 degrees when it opens the Mivec valves. We needed to be able to control timing in the same way if we were going to open the valves sooner, otherwise it wouldn't be as effective (at least for N/A applications).

Some observations...the ignition advance definitely was noticeable...it also made the car run much smoother and it was much more responsive. The final timing on the 4G GT is about 23-24 degrees...I was able to get about 31 pretty easily. This was in the 4000-up range. We were able to get ignition advance much lower in the RPM range as well, as this is where the Mivec Controller will be doing it's thing. So, basically, we can now manipulate the advance at will. We'll be doing some more testing and then get this on the dyno to see what's up.

With this advance capability the car just became that much better to drive! Mitsu should've made it like this to begin with!

Brian

Is the FIC something a person would be able to program on there own or will you have to take it to a tuner? I'd like to get one but I'm not really sure about the shops in my area.

There are quite a few people doing "street tuning"...you'll need a wideband O2 sensor to monitor your AFR's, but with that you can definitely do the tuning yourself...

Honestly, I don't know how you could...the stock ECU has so many safegaurds in place for every possible thing...

Even if you tried to run it crazy lean it'll just pull timing until it stops knocking...

Tuning isn't as bad as you think, you just have to be willing to jump in there and do it.

Hmm...the more I read about what are doing with this thing and how easy you make it sound to do the more interested I get.

not all the way there quite yet though

LOL! It's a process...it's not hard, it just takes time and a little understanding...I will tell you this, you will definitely come away with a better understanding for how the car (and other cars in general) works and how it does what it does.

Technically, no. However, if you're dealership is strict about modding they may try to deny your claims...they still have to prove your mods caused the failure though...but it's a pain in the ass if they are dicks...

Even so, it doesn't void the whole warranty, just the electronics portion...but even then they still have to prove your mod was at fault...

Or, you could just remove the harness and FIC if you have an issue...
